Course Objectives:
- Describe the role and scope of practice of the pediatric sexual assault nurse examiner
- Describe forensic nursing ethics as it relates to child sexual abuse examinations
- Define child sexual abuse
- Describe the reporting process for child sexual abuse.
- Identify concepts of offender typology
- Label anatomical locations of female and male genitalia.
- Discuss the statement “it is normal to be normal”
- Identify various normal genital anatomical variants
- List developmental milestones of different age groups
- Discuss the changes that occur in adolescent brain development
- Identify common examination positions for a child undergoing a genital examination.
- Identify common abuse mimics
- Discuss physical assault and trauma findings and conditions in child abuse
- Describe the difference in a forensic interview and a nurse taking a medical and event history
- Define the importance of peer review
- Describe the court process
- Identify the roles of various multidisciplinary team members
- Discuss what to do when receiving a subpoena and pretrial preparation
- Describe differences in evidence collection in the prepubescent and post-pubescent child
- List common findings in pediatric strangulation
- Describe correct photography techniques
- Discuss substance use as it relates to child abuse examinations
- Describe ACE’s and resilience

The online course is equivalent to 40 contact hours of education, within 18 self-paced units.
Approved by the California Board of Nursing for 40 classroom hours, CEP 15357
Registrants must meet these qualifications:
Have a license as a Registered Nurse.
