The course is designed as an overview of basic knowledge to prepare registered nurses to perform a thorough assessment of unique forensic patient populations across the lifespan.  The biological, psychological, and social dynamics involved in the care of a forensic patient, beginning at the crime scene and continuing through the judicial process will be introduced. The role of the nurse will be emphasized throughout the course. The course includes the concepts of patient-centered care, trauma informed care,  evidence collection, documentation, medical forensic history, injury assessment and management, photography, safety planning, and the judicial system  including  informed consent, confidentiality, reporting, and testifying.  

Overview of Forensic Healthcare

  • Designed for registered nurses (RNs)
  • Online course, minimum 40-hour didactic program to introduce registered nurses and other interested healthcare persons to the nursing assessment and treatment of individuals who have experienced trauma in its many forms.
  • The course will include trauma informed care guidance and information about testifying. 
  • Additionally,  identification, collection and preservation of evidence that might be overlooked or lost during a hospital visit will be introduced.
